2-Day Couples Weekend Workshop

A workshop guiding couples on a path toward a harmonious and long-lasting relationship.

Do you have difficulty communicating and understanding each other?

Are you stuck, arguing in circles about the same issues?

Are you in a good relationship and would like to make it even better?

Is laying a strong foundation from the beginning important to you?

Or, perhaps the friendship between the two of you is not as strong as it was in the beginning.

What if.....

I told you that I had a secret weapon for your relationship woes and dreams? That it would add longevity to your relationship. Create a friendship that can go the distance.  Enhance romance and intimacy.  Not only that but it would have you approaching and handling conflict in a new and intimate way. A way that afforded you the opportunity to dive into your partners life, gain understanding and insight and actually resolve conflicts.

You might be thinking no way!

And if such a thing did exist it would take so much time and energy that I couldn’t make it a yes even if I wanted to. Let alone convince my partner.  But, entertain me for a minute. There’s a workshop called The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, that takes all the difficulty out of it.

  • it breaks down major relationship concepts,

  • gives you new insights and research-based relationship skills that can dramatically improve the intimacy and friendship in your relationship

  • it combines teaching and demonstrations with one-on-one work sessions where you and your partner focus on your relationship with each other

  • helps you resolve conflict in a healthy and productive way

  • teaches skills in a fun, engaging and easy to understand way

  • gives you practical ways of applying techniques into your relationship immediately

Oh, and did I mention it’s cheaper than doing couples therapy and divorce. Not that I’m knocking couples therapy because ummm hello I’m a couples therapist.  But, as a couples therapist I’ve seen couples in my office that didn’t need the intensity of couples therapy instead they needed to learn relatioship skills, gain perspective attain knowledge and acquire tools.  I’ve also seen others that if they had done a workshop way back when they first started seeing signs of distress they wouldn’t have gotten to the point of needing couples therapy.  Gottman's research shows that on average, couples wait six years of being unhappy with their relationship before getting help. That's like waiting six years with cancer before seeking medical care. Please don't wait until your relationship is falling apart to get help.

This program is based upon the New York Times best seller The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work by Dr. John Gottman, Ph.D.  Straightforward in its approach yet profound in its effect, the principles outlined in Dr. Gottman's groundbreaking book teach partners new and startling strategies for making their relationships work.

For over 30 years Dr. Gottman scientifically analyzed the habits of married couples and established a method of correcting the behaviors that put thousands of marriages on the rocks. He helps couples focus on each other and the small day-to-day moments that, strung together, make up the heart and soul of any relationship.

This workshop is designed to strengthen your marriage or committed relationship. If you already have a strong relationship, this workshop will provide you with insights and tools to make it even better. If your relationship is distressed, this workshop will provide a road map for repair.

Be proactive and learn what decades of research teach us about healthy relationships.

Yvette E. McDonald, LCSW, is an authorized Seven Principles Program Educator who will lead the workshop and teach you what successful couples specifically do to create long-lasting loving relationships, as well as the benefits of a stable, committed relationship.

Appropriate couples are:

  •  Married couples

  •  Pre-engaged couples (those considering marriage)

  •  Engaged or Premarital couples (those taking steps towards marriage)

  •  Every phase of relationships, from newlyweds to senior couples

  •  Those who wish to enhance an already “good” marriage or relationship

  •  Those needing better conflict management tools

  •  Those considering couples therapy but who are not "ready" for weekly therapy yet

  •  People of all backgrounds, ages, Faiths

Inappropriate couples are those experiencing: *Psycho-educational classes are NOT appropriate for all couples.

  • dealing with severe relationship distress,

  • significant emotional and physical abuse,

  • serious emotional or mental health problems,

  • Active addictions (alcohol, drug, sexual, gambling, etc.)

You should instead seek individual or couples therapy.

Will we have to share our personal problems and issues with the class?

No! The class does not include sharing problems or issues publicy. Couples Exercises are done privately. This is not group therapy, it is Psychoeducational! If you just want to sit back, learn, and participate in the private exercises with your partner, you are welcome to do so.

Must both parterns attend or can I come alone?

Since the class involves couples doing exercises together, both partners must participate. If the class is offered over a period of time and one partner must miss a particular class meeting, then the other partner is encouraged to attend the lecture portion of the class. He or she may use the Couples Exercise time to do part of the exercises and then do the full exercise with their partner later. They may also use exercise time to read the Seven Principles book.

My partner isn't a reader. Can we still come to the class if he/she won't read the book?

Yes, still come to the class. While the book provides very valuable information, the class lectures will summarize the content of the book. Each person will need a Couples Guide, however, to do the Couples Exercises effeciently.

Should we do the exercises in the book at home or save them for class?

The class will involve doing some of the exercises from the book so doing them first at home would duplicate some of them. In some cases, the directions for doing the exercises in class have been revised and updated from those presented in the Seven Principles book. The Leaders also role-play how to and how not to do some exercises in order to help participants get the most out of each exercise. There are some exercises in the book that the class will not have time to do, and couples are encouraged to do them at home after that chapter has been covered in class.

What is the cancellation policy?

Your registration fee is non-refundable, but transferable. Once registered if unforeseen circumstances prevent you from attending the 7 Principles Program Class with Yvette, you will have the opportunity to register for a different workshop within 12 months of the registration date instead. However, if you cancel within 72 hours or fail to show up for the workshop, there will be a $75 transfer fee applied. All classes are enrolled on a first come, first serve basis.
